Our Garden, Our Future is a Wales-based initiative exploring how communities can play a stronger role in caring for land, growing food, restoring nature and shaping the places they call home.

We will support communities to develop the concept of inter-generational stewardship, by creating a natural space for their community, nourishing lives with both food and access to nature, strengthening a sense of belonging. This concept will be part of changing the narrative on land stewardship in Wales.

Backed by the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation, this project is being driven by the 'Seven Generations' project that is a collaboration between Rights Community Action and Incredible Edible. Together, they are exploring how practical local action can sit alongside the wider legal and planning changes needed to support communities over the long term around land.

In each place, the work will look a little different - that is part of the point. Local relationships, local histories and local ambitions will shape what happens on the ground. But taken together, these places can help show what a more community-led future for land and place could look like in Wales, with its unique relationship with land.

Many community groups already care for and grow on small areas of public land, but these arrangements are often informal and can be withdrawn with little warning. 'Our Garden, Our Future' will advocate for communities to secure a lasting right to grow and a new, intergenerational principle of stewardship of land.
